annular packing units
What is an Annular Packing Element? An Annular Packing Element is a round elastomeric piece of technology that essentially closes mechanically by means of a Blowout Preventer and operator closing pressure to seal off an open hole, drill pipe, drill collar, casing, or tubing. Ultimately, the Annular Packing Element is critical to control wellbore fluids during drilling operations.
*Food for thought - The word Annular was derived from the word Annulus, which is the basic shape of the ring resembling the open hole. Our OEM GBOP Annular Packing Element has been tested rigorously and proven to meet and exceed API 16A 4th Ed. and API 16AR requirements. This line of Packing Elements is created with a proprietary compound of NBR and metallic inserts that have been found to be extremely effective during high pressure, high temperature operations. These packing elements are specifically engineered for long lasting performance, and have been put to the test through API 16A 4th Ed. design validation requirements for PR1. What makes our GBOP Annular Packing Element different? How did it perform during validation testing? |

Whats the difference between NBR, HNBR, CR, and Natural Rubber? Each packing element is molded predominantly with either NBR, HNBR, CR, or Natural Rubber and is ultimately the choice of the end user depending on the application. Each compound has particular advantages and disadvantages, and should be considered as part of the purchasing agreement. Ask a sales person today for more information.
- NBR (Buna, Nitrile or Buna-N)
- Typically used in oil-based drilling fluid operations.
- Widely used elastomer compound due to its highly oil and fuel resistant properties as well as tensile strength.
- Excellent compression set, tear strength, and elongation properties
- Excellent resistance to abrasives, water, alcohols, silicone greases, hydraulic fluid, wellbore fluid.
- Exposure to sour gas may reduce performance.
- Poor performance when exposed to ozone, weather, fire, and sunlight.
- Poor performance in high temperature operations (Greater than 250°F)
- HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber)
- Typically used in oil-based drilling fluid operations.
- Widely used elastomer compound due to its highly oil, fuel, and temperature resistant properties.
- Excellent resistance to abrasives, sour gas, steam, ozone, water, alcohols, silicone greases, hydraulic fluid, wellbore fluid.
- Excellent performance in high temperature operations (up to 350°F)
- Poor performance when exposed flame, aromatic oils, and polar organic solvents.
- CR (Neoprene Rubber)
- Typically used in oil-based drilling fluid operations.
- Excellent resistance to oil, gas, and water.
- Excellent performance in low temperature operations (-30°F)
- Poor performance in higher temperature operations (greater than 170°F)
- NR (Natural Rubber)
- Typically used in water-based drilling fluid operations.
- Excellent service life.
- Temperature limitations (up to 225°F).
